Meta-Analysis: A Gold-Standard Approach to Evaluating Supplement Research

The answer lies in scientific evidence.
Research on supplements can range from lab and animal studies to studies in humans, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Lab and animal studies can help us understand how something might work in the body.
However, to better understand a supplement’s potential benefits, appropriate amounts, and safety in people, we need well-designed human studies.
When multiple human studies are available, looking at them together—and assessing how consistent the findings are—can provide a clearer picture of the overall evidence on supplements.
One way researchers do this is through meta-analysis.
What Is a Meta-Analysis?
A meta-analysis is a type of research study that combines results from multiple similar studies.
This helps researchers draw more reliable conclusions, especially when results differ.
What If There Are Only a Few Studies?
If only one or two human studies exist for a supplement or its ingredients, it is usually too early to draw strong conclusions.
A meta-analysis may not be possible.
In these cases, it may be wise to wait for more research before deciding whether to use the supplement—unless the existing studies show strong and consistent results.
As more studies are published, results may change.
For example, early studies on a supplement might suggest a benefit on heart health, while later studies may not.
A meta-analysis helps bring all the data together to provide a more balanced view.
What If There Are Many Studies?
When many studies are available, researchers may conduct multiple meta-analyses on the same topic.
In these situations, it is important to carefully review the overall body of evidence rather than relying on a single study.
Berberine and folic acid are often studied in areas related to heart and metabolic health, and are examples with a large amount of research available.
When findings are consistent across many high-quality studies, it gives us much greater confidence that the findings are meaningful.
Why Is Meta-Analysis Considered a Gold Standard in Scientific Research
In evidence-based science, research methods are often ranked by strength.
Meta-analyses—especially those based on well-designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs)—are considered among the highest levels of evidence in nutritional research, as shown in the figure below.[1]

However, a meta-analysis is only as good as the studies it includes.
If the underlying studies are low quality or biased, the results of the meta-analysis may also be affected.
Why Systematic Reviews Matter
A reliable meta-analysis should be based on a systematic review, which is a comprehensive and unbiased search of all relevant studies on a topic.
This helps reduce bias and ensures nothing important is left out.
This is why you may see studies described as “systematic reviews and meta-analyses.”
