When we shop for supplements, one of the first things we check is the “Suggested Use” section on the label.

This section helps answer an important question: How much should we take each day?

For example, in the Suggested Use section of our flagship product, EVYLO, we provide guidance on daily serving size.

As discussed in previous articles, U.S. regulations allow supplement manufacturers discretion in determining serving size (or “dosage”) recommendations.

As a result, suggested amounts can vary widely across products – even for the same ingredients, such as berberine, bergamot, CoQ10, and folic acid.

Why do some products recommend a fixed amount, while others suggest a range?

What factors influence these recommendations?

And more importantly, what should be guiding them?

Understanding how dosage recommendations are developed can help consumers make more informed decisions when choosing supplements.

 

How Supplement Dosage Recommendations Develop

Ideally, dosage recommendations should be guided by scientific research.

Here’s how that research typically evolves:

 

1. Laboratory and Animal Research

Research often begins in cell cultures or animal models.

These studies help scientists understand how an ingredient behaves biologically.

However, results from these studies do not reliably determine appropriate dosages for humans, because absorption, metabolism, and physiology differ significantly between cells, animals, and people.

 

2. Early Human Studies (Single-Group Studies)

The next step may involve human participants taking a supplement without comparison to a control group.

These studies can help identify potential dosages that are tolerated and may show changes over time.

However, without a comparison group (such as placebo[1]), we cannot determine whether observed effects are truly due to the supplement.

That’s why the dosages tested in these early studies are typically used to explore potential effects and safety, rather than to confirm definitive benefits.

 

3. Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs)

Randomized controlled trials compare one or more supplement doses to a placebo or another group taking a different supplement.

RCTs are considered the most reliable way to determine whether a supplement produces measurable effects in humans.

Let’s look at a simplified hypothetical example* using omega-3 fatty acids and healthy cholesterol levels:

Without a comparison group, the 1,000 mg dosage may appear helpful.

However, when compared to placebo, the same result is observed — suggesting no measurable difference at that dosage.

In such cases, researchers may explore alternative ingredients or different dosage levels to determine what amount, if any, shows consistent effects.

As additional research becomes available, conclusions about appropriate dosages may evolve over time.

Now, let’s assume additional randomized controlled trials were conducted at higher dosages.*

This example illustrates two key points:

  • A range of dosages may be supported by evidence, rather than a single fixed amount

As research accumulates, dosage recommendations may evolve.

 

Official Recommended Intakes and Safety Limits

When a substantial body of scientific evidence accumulates and a nutrient has broad public health relevance, expert panels may establish recommended intake levels and tolerable upper limits.

These official recommendations are widely used as guidance, as they reflect a comprehensive review of available evidence and the collective judgment of scientific experts.

For certain nutrients — particularly vitamins and minerals — expert panels such as the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies[2] establish:

  • Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) or Adequate Intakes (AIs)
  • Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (ULs)

Upper limits are especially important because more is not always better.

Exceeding safe levels may increase the risk of side effects.

Examples of nutrients with established intake recommendations include:

There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches.
